50-50
I’m all alone in this world, she said,Ain’t got nobody to share my bed,
Ain’t got nobody to hold my hand—
The truth of the matter’s
I ain’t got no man.
Big Boy opened his mouth and said,
Trouble with you is
You ain’t got no head!
If you had a head and used your mind
You could have me with you
All the time.
She answered, Babe, what must I do?
He said, Share your bed—
And your money, too.
Langston Hughes
I choose this poem because its a bit funny and some time ago i related to this poem how i wanted someone to be there but didn't realize how much it was going change my life not only money wise but emotionally.

The poem is pretty funny. It kind of seems like the guy wants to use her, but since the title is 50-50 I guess he just wants to share responsibilities.
ReplyDeletegood choice for a poem, its easy to relate to. Relationships do cost money and nowadays it seems like a woman is paying for the man so its not 50/50. the tables have turned and splitting fairly isnt the way anymore.
ReplyDeleteinteresting choice Ashley, and as you saw in class Hughes is a poet with lots of great poems. The thing to ponder also is that here a man will sell his love for money, as opposed to many stereotypes of the opposite situation
